Fosco Cancelliere — Fullstack Developer
I'm Fosco. I build the parts of software people actually touch. I notice when a form quietly eats what you typed, or when an icon and text are ever so slightly out of alignment. Most people notice too, they just don't have commit access.
I trained as a biomedical engineer: five years learning the ways a human body fails, and then went into software, where things fail more often but complain less. These days I'm at ParagonERP in Utrecht, turning “can it just do this one thing for us” into something that survives contact with an ERP.
Before that, I spent two and a half years at CodeGrade building the grading interface that thousands of computer science students met their deadlines through, and occasionally shouted at.
I like problems where a real person is on the other end of the screen and the stakes aren't hypothetical: clinicians, students, warehouse staff. Least favourite sentence in software: “the user will figure it out.”
Off-hours I run and play in D&D campaigns that have outlived two employers, spend an ungodly amount of time at my sewing machine, go to the gym, and then undo all of my hard work by baking and eating the things filed under recipes. Check them out! Don't worry there is no life story attached to them - just sugary goodness.
work
I'm a fullstack developer in the Netherlands who keeps ending up in domains where the software matters to someone specific — clinicians, students, warehouse staff. Trained as a biomedical engineer, which is why half of this list involves hospitals.

Paragon is cloud ERP — purchasing, inventory, assembly. The product I inherited was a Servoy monolith. A lot of what I do now is taking pieces of that apart into hexagonal microservices, with a real UI in front instead of whatever the monolith used to paint. Node, TypeScript, a lot of SQL, Kubernetes — and the old Servoy still has to keep paying the bills while we do it.

CodeGrade grades code automatically for universities: 180+ languages, and very little patience from anyone whose deadline is in nine minutes. I spent two and a half years there, mostly in the interfaces students and teaching assistants actually live in. I took features from “sales already promised this” to shipped, which meant negotiating with support and sales about as often as with the test suite. When a grade depends on your code path, “works on my machine” stops being funny.

Patients forget their medication, and their physician usually finds out at the next appointment, months late. InTakeCare was built to close that gap: one interface for clinicians, another for patients. I built the web interface and the application framework under it, and coordinated a small team of novice developers into shipping something a hospital would actually accept — a setting where “move fast and apologise later” is not available to you. Written up as my master's thesis; the usability work fed into a GNB 2023 paper on smart virtual assistants for medication adherence.

Cardiac rehabilitation mostly happens at home, where nobody is watching and the exercise is easy to skip. MoRA Heart, built with Humanitas Research Hospital: an Android app paired over BLE with wearable sensors so clinicians could see whether patients actually did the work. First time I had a client whose requirements weren't up for discussion. A hospital rehabilitation department has strong opinions about what patients will and won't do, and they were usually right.

education
MSc Information Bioengineering
Milan, IT
Sep 2019 - Apr 2022
My studies covered deepening the understanding of Biomedical Signals, modelling of stochastic processes and their predicting algorithms, the interfacing between human and machine, ICT for healthcare, Human Genomics, as well as computing infrastructures and computer security.
BSc Biomedical Engineering
Milan, IT
Sep 2015 - Sep 2019
The course focused on laying the foundation of engineering for different areas and their relation to the less-idealized systems within the human body. Mechanics, Electronics, Informatics, Fluid dynamics, Electromagnetism and the physical laws governing these fields within the field of physiology, as well as Informatics and Information theory to process and recognize the signals produced from the human body.
